here's my actual Metroid Prime 4 thoughts if anyone give a crap

Responding on a forum talking about Metroid's tone: "Here’s my theory, which nobody should invest in because I don’t know anything about the Prime games and didn’t even enjoy the few hours I played of the first one. I’m likely within the top three most unqualified users in this forum to speak on this.

I feel like… Of course they have to know this, right? The only thing that could make this decision make sense is if they feel a crushing hostile atmosphere would hit harder when there is warmth and levity to compare it against. I’m saying we’re gonna have a Final Fantasy VI moment where shit gets the worst it’s ever been and facilitates the most oppressive atmosphere Metroid has ever had. I’m not saying all these guys are going to get killed but it kinda would need to be something that dramatic and drastic.

I also feel this way because of how they’re handling this strange open world-like central zone. Compared to the rest of the game’s familiarly dense room structure it seems the word of the day for Prime 4 is “contrast.”

Please keep in mind that I do not think anything I’m suggesting here is a good idea, but the only logical conclusion I can come to about why they would do these things to a Metroid game. If they’re showing a juvenile motorcycle power fantasy it stands to reason they will eventually strip it away to make the player feel more vulnerable than if they never had it to begin with. If they’re introducing quirky redditor cops bumbling around it stands to reason they will eventually strip them away to make the player feel more lonely than if they were never there to begin with. I think it’s a worthwhile direction to pursue since normally Metroid games (at least the 2D ones I’ve played (and adored!)) carry the exact same tone from start to end, so it’s interesting to explore how much deeper those feelings can go when contrasted against others, but of course there’s ways to accomplish this without entirely ruining the identity of the series in the process."

"Actually, though, the game had been designed so that if you were defeated by the final boss, you'd start over from the entrance to the final hallway in front of the boss' room: there was a power-up in that final hallway, so we wanted for the player to be able to grab it before facing the boss. However, when I checked the latest build, I found that it was booting players much further back than intended... what a brutal bug, I thought.

I immediately brought this bug to programmer Y-kun, but I was surprised by his response:

"No way! This is fine! Restarting them in the final hallway is way too cushy!"

He wouldn't budge. We went back and forth but in the end, he wouldn't fix it, and the game ended up going gold as-is.

Whatever the case, it's my fault for not being able to rein in the programmer's reckless behavior. Allow me to once again apologize to everyone who played the game: I'm sorry.

And so, that's why magazines branded the game "extremely difficult", and why Game Center CX's Arino was ground into the dirt."
