I can’t decide whether or not I love or hate part 1 of this episode which on my rating and categorization scale for Voyager on Bluesky would put it exactly at a 5/10 somewhere after unbearably boring and a what the fuck fever dream.
Due to the awkward pacing of this and it not having a to be continued screen I have no clue when part 1 ends and part 2 begins, this wasn’t even the last thing I wrote here as I stopped right after Torres gave the half-baked excuse for physical violence being the whole it’s the klingon half thing but I won’t victim blame too much for bad genetics. Let’s be clear, I absolutely love Torres as a character but her never taking proper responsibility for her actions pisses me off. However her big thing is physical violence and I am a pacifist so I am biased against it. Which is strange considering I also have an odd fascination with Klingon culture. Well, call me Brad Boimler I guess.

I wrote that Neelix reminds me of my mom. I won’t go into too much detail but I already see my 30+ year meth addicted mom as a racoon. It’s mostly the junk collector thing. I’m glad the Ocampa called the powerful entity the Caretaker and not God. It really shows them to be an enlightened race of people that die before they’re old enough to stop watching Mr. Beast I can imagine water being the easiest thing to replicate seeing as it’s just smashing two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom together. This reminds me of the time I flipped off my high school chemistry teacher when her back was turned just because I read a chemistry book in 5th grade, knew what covalent bonds were but didn’t want to do math during experiments. Astonishing is just the appropriate and dignified response I would expect from Neelix.. Neelix’s character absolutely shines here and degrades later. Ethan Phillips has always played Neelix exceptionally well despite the bad writing in later episodes. Oh god he’s a hugger

I love it when I write notes with zero context. At one point I just wrote that Chakotay is a sub. I believe the context on that note was Chakotay's immediate decision to let this be a Starfleet Crew but even with the bad writing I can excuse it as Chakotay being aware of the fact that there are no Cardassians in the Delta Quadrant. There are fascists though. All of the dialogue related to the Caretaker is so incredibly vague. However I am happy with the “methods beyond your comprehension” line so I’ll leave it at that. Torres being Torres immediately and there was some weirdly sexual moaning before she got sedated. I’m not sure whether or not it was directed that way but I would’ve loved to see her get sedated again. Of course Kim’s mom was established by Janeway as overprotective here with the whole clarinet thing. If Kim’s mom cleans his room than she should be well aware of how many times Kim plays his Clarinet per day. I’d say 2 times a day is normal and 3 or more is a little bit excessive. Also, why is Janeway talking about Kim like he’s already dead here? I get that they pretty much think he’s dead here because they don’t yet know the Caretaker transported him to Ocampa but I know he’s still alive damn it! Stop mourning Kim. With all the horrors beyond his comprehension Ensign Kim experiences from this point forward he might as well be dead I suppose, or I’m sure he wishes he was.

Also of course the sexy girl would be final security for the holographic generator. I mean it’s not like anyone else other than the straight men and lesbians would be smart enough to find the holographic generator. Maybe it’s adaptive. Tom Paris should test it by saying it prefers a bigger boob size. Creep factor sufficiently maximized here with the unconscious needle-suspended bodies and that terrifying scream from Harry will not be his last. I don’t really think Star Trek needs designated psychological torture characters but in Voyager that’s Harry Kim. So they were all at the Caretaker’s array for three days and they’re not dehydrated? I didn’t see any IVs up there. I’m sure methods beyond human comprehension were used to keep them hydrated but if I’m watching Star Trek Voyager sober I want to comprehend something. I love how Tuvok’s personality and expression just does not change after it gets found out that he was a Starfleet traitor infiltrating the Maquis. Just shows that Vulcans are absolutely perfect for inside jobs.

Also I don’t quite remember if Kim and Paris were told to go to sick bay to replace the all dead medical staff but if they were told to go help out in sick bay that’s good delegation by Janeway, that is if she literally had no one else which how could she have even known that was actually the case, but it’s good that they were there to activate the emergency medical hologram because I’m pretty sure every single bit of qualified medical personnel definitely was the entirety of deck 14 where the hull breach occurred and were all sucked directly into the vacuum of space They are all so wound up and professional here and I think it’s because they only brought out corn on the cob. If they had brought out slices of meat lovers pizza or something I would’ve been super unprofessional and very much all over it. For a form far beyond human comprehension the Earth-like holographic projection angle does make sense, but for me it’s just another excuse to not have to come up with another unique alien design or even species name for the Caretaker. The hologram corn on the cob girl doesn’t answer Janeway once she starts asking hard questions. That would absolutely terrify me in her shoes but that’s because I’m a panic-fueled smartass that needs to know everything at all costs.

Kim is either secretly gay and into bad boys, desperate for friends, or both. But I’ve always liked the whole opposite personalities reverse character arc kinda friendships except Ensign Kim doesn’t have a character arc. In the future Lower Decks will do this kind of friendship a hell of a lot better with Mariner and Boimler. This oddly extended control console shot is hot if you’re into hands. Where are my hand freaks at? I’ll admit though that paws are more aesthetically pleasing than hands. Heck I’d even settle for hand-like paws of french canadian terrier Geneviève Bujold. I really just need someone to create a sci-fi universe with only cartoon animals in order to keep my half-dead cough syrup marinated brain properly attentive these days. Brace for impact. As far as impacts go in Star Trek, this Plasma Storm Impact plus the Caretaker pulling the ship 70,000 light years away was a hell of an impact. Short, sweet and to the point. Best impact ever. This scene really shines and shows us an inkling of how much better Voyager could’ve been if it wasn’t written like The Next Generation. The damage effects are awesome but the piss stream warp core leak is hilarious. I’m not well versed enough in fake science to know whether that’s realistic or not.

Kim is needlessly attentive here and it kinda rubs me the wrong way. I’m sure he’s just into powerful lesbians. No wait she has a husband. And a dog. I still don’t believe it. Believe it or not I actually wrote down the name of 1st officer Lt. Commander Cavit in my notes because I couldn’t get the name of Voyager's Chief Medical Officer while watching. Sucks too thankfully because he’s also going to die. I do wish that Lt. Stadi stuck around though and I’ll say that again because even though I’m horrible at math, one interesting dead character to two lifeless dead characters equals bad writing. RIP to those crazy ass mess hall replicators. I will say though that it does make sense for those replicators to be the biggest energy reverses suck on the ship and for them having to go once they get stranded in the Delta Quadrant. Anyway, spoiler alert for the entire premise of the show. And I didn’t work at Panera Bread for 8 months just for the future of humanity not to replicate Grilled Cheese with their Tomato Soup. Tomato Soup without Grilled Cheese is like eating a Jelly Sandwich. Also, it’s established here that Tom Paris has an admiral father. Imagine failing at nepotism. I’d kick his ass just for that alone. Although to be fair, it’s hard for nepotism to prevail when you’re stranded in the delta quadrant 70,000 lightyears away from your parents, although I will say. Even in a future without Capitalism, Nepotism still prevails.

Another note on Lt. Stadi since I've already paced these screenshots incorrectly, I wish we saw more of her and it would've been a lot funnier if Tom Paris died. I’ve always headcanoned Ensign Harry Kim as someone with a severe anxiety disorder, however seeing how overconfident he is originally established here I don’t really think I can go too far over my head with that assessment anymore. Kim is pathetic and the totally not brainwashed Tom Paris is a true street thug. If Starfleet won’t brainwash him I will. It’s a good thing the Chief Medical Officer sucks because he’s going to die. Anyway I can’t really criticize Star Trek for making forgetful characters that die in the first episode since Lieutenant Stadi has one interesting joke and an interesting characterization and immediately died due to that offense, so I’ll assume that making zombie characters suck is preferrable. I also don’t buy the whole dog and husband thing at all for Captain Janeway mostly because she’s drinking Coffee with cream and sugar instead of Coffee black which for Janeway indicates a hostage situation, and no it’s not just because I think all women in power are lesbians although lesbians are very powerful. I just want to see the dog.

This will probably be the easiest thing I ever do. If I screw this up I’ll renounce my status as an undercover Starfleet and or Federation agent entirely. Now where was I? Watching Star Trek Voyager, now segue because all I ever did the past handful of years, aside from play Overwatch 1 & or two was robotrip and watch Star Trek, so in a cruel twist of fate I will now be watching Star Trek in the most sober way possible before I faint like a pokemon character. All glory to the algorithm Gods I am a video editor so I will be getting cute and censoring my more colorful swearing whenever it becomes excessive but when push comes to shove this channel is still TV-MA because I’m not getting paid to babysit. I hate other people’s kids and I don’t have any except for my niece. I was originally going to do caretaker all in one video because Paramount Plus squeezes both parts of Caretaker into one hour and a half long episode so that's how I see them. However, I stopped roughly halfway through anyway so that gives me an excuse to make an introduction video for, as I said earlier, the easiest thing I will ever do. My first note here is simply that I wish we had spent more time with the Maquis ship. It sucks jumping into an interesting Maquis storyline and not really knowing anything about it, although I’m probably only butthurt about that because I hadn't really watched the latter half of Deep Space 9. So yeah, Spoiler alert for those coming over from BlueSky, everyone talks about Deep Space 9 over there and since I’m a stubborn completionist, aside from a forgetful passing watch of a later Deep Space 9 episode or two, I would only ever watch Deep Space 9 from the very first episode and try and pound my way through the rough 1st season before deciding to stop watching it entirely. I love everything the show stands for and my politics would align with that, however in the interest of not going in over my head I’ll save that for another day. In the episode, we basically jump right into badlands technobabble and 90s graphics that aged like milk, although for the time I’m sure they were state-of-the-art. It’s a good thing all of the useless technobabble drowned out whatever Maquis storyline they were going for, because it wasn’t necessary regardless and as everyone already knows filler is better than storytelling. And before I make too many cynical jokes about this episode or Star Trek, I want everyone to know that I’m doing this out of a place of love. And the Badlands is a terribly uncreative name for a series of plasma storms. Now I’m no scientist and I won’t copy and paste from Legally Distinct Search Engine Boggle, oh wait that’s a copyrighted board game, but I’m only willing to believe that Voyager can get through these Plasma storms and not the cramped Maquis ship the I can’t remember the name of it and I’m not looking it up on Memory Alpha. Thankfully after the Expodump Maquis Starship gets whisked away it cuts to a very forcefully Captainlike Janeway seducing Tom Paris with her chaotic whimsy, the whimsy of, take this demeaning position of observer against your will and I’ll let you out of your federation Rehab commission which hopefully aligns with your will. I would say that unironic Rehabilitation facilities in the Star Trek universe sounds like an excellent idea, but I’m pretty sure there’s nothing actually meaningful there and it’s just another fancy way of dressing up the phrase penal colony. If I were making my own sci-fi universe, I believe that the only way true lawful rehabilitation is advanced future brainwashing technology. But whatever, Star Trek is too “ethical” for that. Well now that the clothes are off let’s continue with flying at women at warp speed. Let those forever be Lt. Stadi's last words. A brief introduction and an even briefer death.
