I found a still-wrapped copy of the first game I was credited with as a design consultant. It was published 30 years ago by Tune 1000, which became better known for its karaoke software.

Spent 40 hours exploring the world of Eternal Strands, made in Quebec by @yellowbrickgames.bsky.social. The more I played it, the more I enjoyed it. I liked combining powers, taking down titans and exploring the various areas. It reminded me of Kingdom of Amalur and Shadow of the Colossus.

On PC, several games standed out in 1995, namely Full Throttle, The Dig, Phantasmagoria, The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery, MechWarrior 2, Command & Conquer, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, Heroes of Might and Magic and Star Wars: Dark Forces.

In 1995, the Super NES was at its peak with Dragon Quest VI, Mega Man 7, Super Mario World 2, Donkey Kong Country 2, Castlevania: Dracula X, Killer Instinct, EarthBound and Ogre Battle. The PlayStation had Wipeout and Twisted Metal, and the Saturn had Panzer Dragoon and Sega Rally Championship.

The role-playing game Chrono Trigger, developed by a dream team (Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama) for the Super NES turns 30 this year. It followed a group of adventurers transported back in time, seeking to save the world from its future destruction. A masterclass.

1995 saw the birth of a French video game mascot, Rayman. Designed by Michel Ancel, the platform game was available at the launch of the PlayStation in Europe and North America and became the first success of Ubi Pictures (Ubisoft's first studio in Montpellier).

30 years ago, Nintendo launched its most unusual and least successful console, the Virtual Boy (770,000 units sold). The system standing on a bipod was not ergonomic, its stereoscopic display was not immersive and only displayed two colors. It was released with the first version of Mario Tennis.

Westwood Associates (later Westwood Studios) was founded in 1985. The company, which created games such as Eye of the Beholder, Dune II, The Legend of Kyrandia, Lands of Lore, The Lion King, Blade Runner and countless Command & Conquer, disappeared in 2003, five years after its purchase by EA.

Richard Garriot delivered in 1985 one of his most emblematic RPG, Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, where we do not seek to defeat an incarnation of evil, but to become a model of virtue in the world of Britannia. The game presented moral dilemmas, in order to provoke emotional responses from players.

Decades from now, 1985 will be remembered as the year Tetris was created by Soviet Alexey Pajitnov. Tetris has such an incredible story. The game spread like wildfire around the world. The compilation and documentary Tetris Forever from @digitaleclipse.bsky.social is a must.

Microsoft will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2025. Although the company initially provided a BASIC language interpreter for one of the first computers, the Altair 8800, Microsoft started to publish video games by the end of the 70s and created its own in the 80s. The Xbox venture began in 2001.

Considered the first game linked to a film, Shark Jaws appeared in arcades in 1975. Published 3 months after the successful film Jaws, the game was freely inspired by the latter. The gameplay was simple, you played a diver who had to catch fishes while avoiding the shark wandering around.

1975 saw the emergence of a new genre, the role-playing game. Building on the success of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game, various adaptations were created in American university computer labs, on the PLATO and DEC PDP-10 systems, such as Dungeon, dnd, Moria, pedit5 and Orthanc.

It wasn't until 1975 that Atari's home version of Pong was released by Sears. During the holiday season of that year, fans lined up to obtain their copy of the console, under the Tele-Games banner. 150,000 units were sold at a cost of US $98.95 (which represents an adjusted price today of US $575).

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of Western Gun, developed by Taito. Known as Gunfight in America, it opposed two cowboys. It was possible to move sideways and change the firing angle. Rather than being represented by abstract blocks, it featured animated characters, influenced by manga culture.

I loved Astro Bot, a fantastic platformer exclusive to the PS5. The game offers more than 80 levels, each more colorful and imaginative than the last, spread across six galaxies and 50 planets. Astro has access to 15 new abilities. The game celebrates the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand.
