There is a British version also - the only difference in the quote is we say "Ladybird", not "Ladybug"

My understanding is he's a massive Asiaphile (which I'm told is "weeb, but you have lots of money") - when I mentioned this story to people familiar with Japanese culture who were aware of Izanami, none of them had ever made that connection before. It's still funny, but likely an accident

Glasgow wireless worldcon was my first /ever/ sff con and Deep Secret turned out to be a surprisingly useful primer

One wonders why she couldn't have borrowed for /those/ reasons, rather than speculate with money entrusted to her on others behalf and then borrow when the speculation didn't turn a profit

That phrasing isn't in bsky.app/profile/jemi... 's original article

There's a BUNCH of authors where I've ended up buying their entire back catalogue after a 99p or even free deal for a single book (though in your case it was a twitter recommendation for Clockwork Boys)

as an attendee, I have a /very/ faint memory of the description saying it was in-person only, but I hope it was recorded anyway - it was hilarious

Props to the audience member who was probably the first person ever to get a round of applause for "more of a comment than a question...."

I did hear of someone who got to PhD student before someone explained you can't make toast in a microwave (this came to light when some bread exploded after they repeatedly tried to get it to crisp up)

I assume it wasn't one of these, but there are a bunch of ready meals where you can actually heat them in the oven in the plastic - I used to do this rather than microwave for eg lasagne (but it would say on the instructions if you could)

Genuine question, can the signal be filtered from the noise ahead of time? Like, it's easy to identify "insider trading" from brand new accounts once the event has happened, but are the amounts enough to distinguish from crazy reckless bettors?

oh yeah, it's a common structure, the only problem comes from people who INSIST every story must follow it (especially those who criticise a story that doesn't follow it "because every story must follow it", which is circular anti-logic)

as a kid I followed the instructions for every set I got - and then some minutes / hours / days later, I disassembled them into The Big Lego Barrel and then I made whatever I wanted

There's a description of this by Pratchett in the book "The Unadulterated Cat" which features a line about half way through the attempt that goes something like

"By this point, the cat is showing such a new lease of life that treatment can be said to have worked"

We talked about that poem in my book club - I did wonder to what extent he was /good enough/ and if maybe worse contemporaries had been forgotten about

If you installed Francesca in that position, it would solve the problem of Fiasco wanting to be there.
