My chart for the Globe. TL;dr - birth rates in Canada rose when we had aggressive income redistribution, high taxation, big infrastructure spending, strong unions, and loads of new housing development. Absent those factors, birth rates have always fallen.

Both men and women struggle with things like work-life balance, but devaluation is consistently a much bigger issue for women than for men.

Why? In economics especially, senior women are much more likely than senior men to feel that they aren't valued.

Situation for female academics is much less drastic, partly because of past hiring practices (so not as many older women profs to begin with) and also possibly because women are less likely to stick around.
