The silver lining here though is that being in the Great Seal so often meant she ran into Talanji early on and the two of them become besties. Talanji is like a little sister to Zai and they were both Suspicious of the Zanchuli Council and concerned about the threats from within and without

So TLDR; Zai doesn't like Zul, Zai doesn't trust Zul, and Zai does everything in her power to interact with him as little as possible because he makes her feel primal fear. So as far as being an actual apprentice goes, she mostly just runs errands for the other Atal'zul and the royal family.

But since her Sight had gone unnoticed for so long, she was behind the others who already had years of training. I don't think Zul picked her because she had any unique potential, but rather just to keep her close so he wouldn't have to deal with a rogue seer possibly ruining or delaying his plans +

+ After the defeat in Pandaria she was extremely disilusioned and didn't have anywhere or anyone to turn to back home in Zuldazar, so when Zul's people came to her telling her Zul himself had summoned her she had no choice but to accept. I imagine she was one of a handful of promising apprentices +

+ she went of her own free will because she wanted to fight for something that actually mattered to her. At the time she hadn't been Diagnosed with Prophet Powers yet, she just had Inklings and Feelings of things that might come to pass. The TLDR though is that she never liked Zul +

So this is extra fun because Zai's character is heavily inspired by the journals you can loot off mobs in the Throne of Thunder raid (and by the Pandaria Zandalari in general), and this one in particular breaks down her opinion of Zul pretty well - the difference is that she's wasn't ordered to go +
