The issue is that bowl games just don't have anything to offer a school like notre dame when all the people with the power to force the coach out care primarily about playoffs now.

Coaches and players are supposed to decide what matters for the program, that's how it works. The idea that school administration should go in and tell the coach "no you HAVE to have a 0.7% increase less expenses to your budget" is stupid. Likewise, "you have to risk a 10-3 record to get a 11-2."
