Most people will never see a cougar in the wild. And that’s exactly how they like it. 🐾

One theme of our moose research is finding out what landcape conditions affect their population trends. #TrailcamTuesday

Fall forecast: cooler temperatures, longer nights and 90% chance of bedtime snacks (because hibernation bodies don’t build themselves). #TrailcamTuesday

How do different disturbances impact a stream and its riparian zone?
This August, a Water and Fish project used drones equipped with high resolution LiDAR and thermal sensors to survey 24 streams across four site types:
🌲 Forested
🔥 Fire-affected
🪵 Harvested

Great talk! Apologies to anyone who assumed this was going to be a DJ set.

It's the last day at #TWS2025 but we've got a pretty good finale lined up.

✔️more efficient grizzly bear monitoring
✔️what's influencing moose population size and trends
✔️where are the moose and where are they going?

Key slide from Darío's hair hormone talk. The molecular biology gets a bit technical, so pay careful attention!
October 7, 2025 at 10:12 PM
We and our partners have been making steady progress on extracting more grizzly bear population information from hair samples. Dr. Darío Fernández-Bellon presented where the team is at and how we're going to keep pushing it further!

Why is a group of martens called a richness? Many of these "terms of venery" – a pride of lions, a parliament of owls, etc. – were first recorded in the 15th century. At least some seem to have been meant to be satire (or at least amusing). What are your favourites?

We're enjoying the conversations in the Exhibit Hall! Come by in the next half hour for that good pre-supper viewing of deer mortality photos.
October 6, 2025 at 11:35 PM
That was a big day of talks, but don't leave yet – we have a fun poster in the Exhibit Hall and would love to chat about what we're learning about deer cause of death in caribou ranges! #TWS2025

We studied 117 harvest blocks to understand what factors influence bear, wolf, and other carnivore use of these landscape features. Caribou Program lead Dr. @lfinnegal.bsky.social presented results. #TWS2025

Camera traps have a lot of advantages in ecology research, but it's time-consuming to classify images. Dr. Rebecca Viejou presented on how we can use AI to greatly improve efficiency without compromising accuracy. #TWS2025

We're in Edmonton for @thewildlifesociety.bsky.social! Today we have great presentations and posters about a few ungulate projects, including from our partners @l-hambrecht.bsky.social and Hiroto Goto from @irssubc.bsky.social.

On September 30, Canadians will recognise the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We’re taking time this month to reflect on and share some resources that have helped us better understand the legacy of residential schools and the ongoing impacts of colonialism.

In Alberta and British Columbia, forest management strategies within woodland caribou ranges are changing in timing, intensity, and spatial arrangement in an effort to reduce the impact on caribou. But what will be the impacts to moose?

The lynx and the hare. A boom in the number of hares causes a boom in the number of lynx, which causes a drop in the hare population, which causes a crash in the lynx population, which causes a boom in the hare population... It's the song that never ends! #TrailCamTuesday
