Women are not allowed to keep essential medication, and to receive any treatment they are forced to “prove” their symptoms. For serious or chronic illnesses, medical assistance can take months — sometimes even years.

3/3 At least 1,167 women were criminally prosecuted solely for organizing or taking part in peaceful assemblies.

This is gender-based political violence aimed at silencing women and pushing them out of public and political life.

2/3 But peaceful participation did not protect them from repression: security forces responded with an unprecedented wave of violence.

According to Viasna, at least 9,200 women faced persecution during this time: detentions, searches, and arrests were accompanied by humiliation and ill-treatment.

Threats, hate, doxxing, stalking, humiliation — all of these are real forms of violence that cause deep harm, undermine safety, and silence voices. But every woman has the right to safety, dignity, and freedom of expression.

❗ UPDATE: Ukrainian officials report that “women and men detained in Belarus and sentenced to various prison terms — from 2 to 11 years — are returning to Ukraine. The youngest of those released today is 18 years old, while the oldest is 58.”

Currently, almost 1,200 political prisoners continue to be imprisoned in the country, including FIDH Vice President Valiantsin Stefanovic and former FIDH Vice President and #NobelPeacePrize Laureate Ales Bialiatski.
