Looking for a replacement to potatoes, rice or pasta, try plantain bananas. They are a starchy cousin to the sweeter cavendish bananas. Great for baking, frying, stews and soups. Their high starch content even makes them a natural thickener when mashed. Definitely a fave of mine.

There's something very wholesome with making bread. It's by far one of the oldest baked goods humans have made. Baking fresh bread is cozy, welcoming and delicious; it invites good feelings in the household and brings people together. Plus it makes awesome bowls for soup.

A cheap and easy way to get your veggie in the winter is with coleslaw. All you need is a cabbage, carrots and some onions. Chop everything, cover it all with a home made brine and let is marinate in the fridge. Two to three weeks of veggies under $15.
