They're having a negative impact on forest ecosystems in particular, as they tend to munch through all the surface layers of leaf litter that usually accumulate there (home for other invertebrates, shelter for ground nesting birds and tree saplings).

Yep that’s largely true - there’s a few native species but most are introduced
