I've wanted to do this for a while. It's a hellscape nowadays trying to get simple tasks done.

i kind of like the idea of ghosts manifesting exclusively as white collar crime tied to specific buildings

I do not know how to explain to you how it feels to watch your savings go up in flames paying healthcare costs while fighting a medical system that gaslit you for years before finally giving you an accurate diagnosis and starting appropriate treatment that isn't covered by insurance...

Yes, that is 100% the vibe. Everyone thinks violent crime, some consider property crime... but embezzlement ghosts? Spirits of wage theft? The spectres of capitalism? Unexplored and unexpected.

I was the last graduating class! And nobody who really knew what happened can talk about these ghosts, the ghosts that walk the halls of that place.

And within a week, the board, staff, and faculty all signed an agreement to keep quiet about everything under force of litigation.
The board announced that 2016 was our last year, provided funding for every unfinished student to transfer on a full ride to a nearby school, and then closed the doors.

In all seriousness though, the top-ranking finance guy left in 2015 and the new replacement checked the books. The numbers didn't add up. She said she would take it to the board. The Pres told her he would fire her if she did. Staff and students rallied to support her.

Why is it haunted?
As King explains in Doctor Sleep, some places eat The Shine. And that building has hunger.
As those who shine feel pain, they release steam... and then that steam is consumed for power. And what is more painful than laying eyes on a funko pop?
The building ate too well.

But I know. I know perhaps *uniquely* well, too. As student body president, I worked with the President, board, and admin staff.

Funko Pop purchased the Wetmore Ave location in Everett, WA after a little-known liberal arts college (Trinity Lutheran) went under due to corruption and scandal.
This was my college. And I knew the bones of this building well. I worked night security as a side gig while getting my 2 degrees.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Agentic has begun to shift that relationship even further (and many algorithmic decision-making systems already set us on this path).
Although, I will say that agentic AI absolutely exists materially within the world, in addition to a metaphysical existence, if you will.
