But 'something something I like to be independent' while having a grocery store restocked for you is like, that huge irony that we like to *feel* independent while always always being highly dependent on hundreds of invisibilised Others that we do not see or acknowledge.

This just made it visible.

The bat's struggles to make connections to other animals through poetry because he is so lonely and isolated, and its ending of forgetting all his poems just so he can snuggle back into the bats are particularly poignant. We don't want him to forget, but all he wanted was connection, and he finds it

The book was published about a year before Jarrell's probable suicide (preceding his death were suicide attempts). Seeking the assistance of a psychiatrist in the early 60s was quite atypical, at the time, and they could not help him, because the field of psychology was still quite nascent.

(Caveat: I have read very good domestic discipline fics where the DD helps the character and their life is improved. I've read very good iddy DD fics that would be DV irl and you need to hardcore suspend your belief to make it work. That's what this half mil fic has unfortunately become :/ )

I think narratively in fiction, the way to really make DD work in a long fic and keep the pacing up is to a) move from issue to issue as it's resolved and b) be sparing about the escalations on core issues and c) show escalation happening carefully.

You can't always beat the trauma out of someone.

This fic I'm reading, that I love, is now over half a million words long and this guy is still being thrashed/belted/caned/smacked and corner-timed over this specific issue, and he's just escalated in a terribly self-destructive way. He's not learning or growing because of this "discipline."

And because of that, all these DD fics that do this become low-key borderline squicky to read. Because to follow narrative pacing, the DD has to escalate in force/intensity, and does, but concurrently, the issues being targeted also increase, proving that it fails (in fiction specifically).

Unfortunately this is a thing. That + gatekeeping machines just because, like a sibling who just doesn't want to give you the controller yet, but they'd be done if you weren't there.

Gym dynamics separate the wheat from the chaff and there is so much chaff D:
