honorifics: Mr, Mrs etc should be used, except for convicted criminals - and also journalists, sports people, authors, actors, artists, musicians and entertainers in their professional capacity (eg: Throughout the interview, Paxman refused to be sidetracked. But: The burglars entered Mr Paxman's house.) Court reports, in the UK and abroad, should give defendants an honorific unless and until they are convicted. In choosing between Miss, Mrs and Ms, try to find out what the person herself uses, and stick to that. Avoid foreign honorifics (eg: Herr, Madame or Signora).

It is BBC policy not to refer to the accused by surname alone - until a guilty verdict is returned. This is true even of people, like sportsmen and women, who would normally be referred to by surname only. Transgender, or trans, is an umbrella term for a person whose gender identity differs from their sex recorded at birth. A person born male who lives as a female, would typically be described as a “transgender woman” and would take the pronoun “she”. And vice versa. We generally use the term and pronoun preferred by the person in question, unless there are editorial reasons not to do so. If that’s unknown – apply that which fits with the way the person lives publicly. If

On Saturday 8th July spoke at London's Trans Pride rally and made a speech which openly incited violence against women. "I was gonna come here and be really fluffy and be really nice and say yeah be really lovely and queer and gay. Nah. If you see a terf punch them in the fucking face." Metropolitan police officers were in attendance but did not take any action. Despite numerous complaints, the Met continued not to take any action. According to a post on Mumsnet, a user of the site reported the incident to the Met and received a swift reply stating that the matter would not be taken any further. The response referred to Baker as a 'female' and seemed to suggest that inciting violence against women was acceptable because those women were `TERFS'. However, The Daily Mail later reported a statement from the Met Police: "We are aware of a video filmed in Westminster on Saturday, 8 July showing a speaker making remarks during the Trans Pride event... The case was initially closed with no further action. This has been reviewed and the crime report has been re-opened. Enquiries remain ongoing" Eventually, amid a public outcry and following an intervention by Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, Baker was arrested and charged with using threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent to cause harassment alarm and distress. The charge was later altered to the more serious offence of intentionally encouraging the commission of an offence, namely assault by beating.
