In 2000, the federal government closed the facility, operated when GEO Group went by a different name, Wackenhut Corrections Corp., for "excessive abuse and neglect," INCLUDING THE USE OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS ON CHILDREN. Last year, the ACLU of Louisiana and RFK Human Rights co-produced a report on the Louisiana immigration detention system called "Inside the Black Hole" that featured information gathered from interviews with more than 6,000 detainees over roughly two years. Prominent features of the report include prison-like settings, inadequate mental health and medical care, allegations of human rights abuses, and extremely limited access to language interpretation services and to attorneys. Immigrants detained at the Jena facility reported rodent droppings on the facility's kitchen surfaces, human excrement in a shower area and allegations of prolonged isolation leading to medical and mental health distress.

Congress of the United States Washington, DC 20515 ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ 14TH DISTRICT, NEW YORK February 27, 2025 The Honorable Pam Bondi Attorney General of the United States Dear Attorney General Bondi, I write to request clarity on whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) has yielded to political pressure and attempts to weaponize the agency against elected officials whose speech they disagree with. Over the past two weeks, "Border Czar" Tom Homan has gone on multiple forums threatening political prosecution against me, citing resources I distributed informing my constituents and the American public of their constitutional and legal rights. On February 13, 2025, Mr. Homan announced that he had asked the Deputy Attorney General to open an investigation, and that I will be "in trouble now." It has been 14 days since Mr. Homan first threatened to weaponize your agency, but I have not yet heard any referral from the federal government. Homan's actions undercut core Constitutional rights and further transparency is necessary. I am sure you aware of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Indeed, last week, Vice President Vance said that "we may disagree with your views, but we will fight to defend your right to offer it in the public square." Mr. Homan's repeated attempts to use your agency to politically intimidate duly elected officials are a textbook threat to the right to free speech in the United States. Threatening criminal proceedings for exercising the First Amendment is itself a violation of the First Amendment. Educating the public about their rights, especially in a time of rising uncertainty, is a key part of our responsibility as elected officials. A government that uses threats of DOJ investigations to suppress free speech is a threat to all, regardless of political ideology. Please respond no later than March 5, 2025, with an update on the Department of Justice's response to Mr. Homan's request and transparency as to whether my office or myself is actively under investigation for exercising their First Amendment rights and executing on our congressional responsibilities. On Friday the Republican-dominated House Budget Committee presented its budget proposal to the House. It calls for adding $4.5 trillion to the budget deficit in order to extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. It also calls for $1.5 trillion in spending cuts, including cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and supplemental nutrition programs. Budget Committee chair Jodey Arrington (R-TX) said: "The era of wasteful, woke, and weaponized government is over."

…Mr Bove… I have received correspondence indicating that I refused your order to move to dismiss the indictment against Eric Adams without prejudice, subject to certain conditions, including the express possibility of reinstatement of the indictment. That is not exactly correct. The U.S. Attorney, Danielle R Sassoon, never asked me to file such a motion, and I therefore never had an opportunity to refuse. But I am entirely in agreement with her decision not to do so, for the reasons stated in her Feb 12, 2025 letter to the AG. In short, the first justification for the motion-that Damian Williams's role in the case somehow tainted a valid indictment supported by ample evidence, and pursued under four different US attorneys—is so weak as to be transparently pretextual. The second justification is worse. No system of ordered liberty can allow the Govt to use the carrot of dismissing charges or the stick of threatening to bring them again to induce an elected official to support its policy objectives. There is a tradition in public service of resigning in a last-ditch effort to head off a serious mistake. Some will view the mistake you are committing here in the light of their generally negative views of the new Administration. I do not share those views. I can even understand how a Chief Executive whose background is in business and politics might see the contemplated dismissal-with-leverage as a good, if distasteful, deal. But any assistant US attorney would know that our laws and traditions do not allow using the prosecutorial power to influence other citizens,much less elected officials,in this way. If no lawyer within earshot of the President is willing to give him that advice, then I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion. But it was never going to be me. Please consider this my resignation. It has been an honor to serve as a prosecutor in the Southern District of New York. …Hagan Scotten…
