What are some board game mechanics you believe are underutilized/you would like to see more in TTRPG design?

Akin to how a choice *usually* should me omitted from a game if it's not both meaningful and interesting, a similar ethos should also be applied to writing the content within an RPG.

I'm new to RPG writing myself, but I'd like to add onto this: everything in the book should help the players and GM do 2 things
1) understand what kind of game it is
2) how to play said game
Because imo that's the function of an RPG book. It's instructions for a specific font of storytelling.

+ and thousands of pre-existing card games to scaffold mechanics off of (texas holdem, blackjack, trick taking games, etc)

So I encourage YOU to make a ttrpg using playing cards too. Not just cuz it's a blast, but also because it's a great exercise for new designers.

+ can be face up or down to reveal/hide information, or turned sideways to mark usage
+ can easily have tokens or other markers on top of them
+ have a built in "memory" of used cards via stacks like the discard pile
+ collections of cards can create meanings through combination
