Now, with forty only a few weeks away, I can’t help wondering if I’ve lived up to the ideals I used to shout about. Maybe it’s just the world we live in now — a world that seems to reward apathy and punish conviction — but I feel like I’ve spent too long coloring inside the lines.

Then adulthood caught up with me.

In the mid-2000s I was editor-in-chief of my university’s student newspaper. Politics, activism, social justice — that’s what I cared about. I let other people handle the fluff.

I spoke out, loudly & unpopularly, against the homophobia, classism, & racism in my small New England town.

When the wars in Afghanistan & Iraq began to build up, I fell in with a group of anti-war Quakers. I skipped school to attend protests. I fought the administration for the right to set up a counter-table next to the military recruiters. 2/7
