Tropical forests in our time - people, trees and climate. Posts by Oliver Phillips.
Here are two beautiful Lauraceae trees from the wet forest remnants of Colombia's Magdalena Medio.

How many more species remain unknown to science in what remains of the Andean forests?

New plant genus discovered in the Andes. Sumacoa barbata is an arborescent Gesneriad endemic to Cordillera del Cóndor.
David Neill, co-author of the study and legendary figure in neotropical botany, passed away this year. Sumacoa represents both a scientific milestone and a tribute to his legacy.

Thank you to all our dedicated colleagues in the field! They have revealed dozens of rare new tree species, quantified the climate sensitivity of tropical forests, and discovered the Amazon carbon sink.

One of the greatest investments we can make in the future is supporting their work.

Forest measurements are more important than ever.

“Dedicated teams working in the field to collect vital ground-truth data are essential to the success of our missions” - Simonetta Cheli #ESA Director of Earth Observation. Find out more in our latest newsletter.

The "flying rivers" of the Amazon bring water across the continent. As their rainfall is depleted by deforestation, especially in the critical dry season, forest loss in Brazil threatens the stability of the unique Amazon and Andes forests in Peru & Bolivia.

Average tree size across the Amazon has increased by 3.2% every decade, consistent with a response to rising carbon dioxide levels. Big trees, especially, have got bigger.

Big trees are on the rise.

30 years of Amazon forest measurements by RAINFOR partners show that, so far, any impact of #climatechange on forests and large trees have been more than mitigated by the positive effects of increased resources.

Colombia is, by far, the worst.
