“Why The Public Doesn’t Choose Public Schools”-A Poem

You lock the public out of the tracks

And wonder why the public doesn’t choose public schools.

You install metal detectors but you ignore bullying concerns

And wonder why the public doesn’t choose public schools.

🍎 While reviewing the teacher negotiations, our attention was captured when HR director, Brett Shively, stated that he was acting under the school board’s direct request.

🍎When the Union asked which board member, Shively stated he couldn’t say which one but that the Board came to him.

🍎We stand with our teachers union.

🍎They should continue to negotiate until they are offered appropriate pay.

🍎Unions are necessary as they fight for our rights as working neighbors.

✨According multiple post out of the chamber conference, residents here need to make $90,000-$120,000 to afford a house.

✨This number didn’t include rental. However, we can assume it’s just as high.

✨We can’t control if the School district changes the bus routes to make them safer for our students.

✨But we still value safety and we believe in action.

✨So we purchased some reflective safety bands to pass out to students.

We have to protect our public schools and it starts locally.

When staff doesn’t understand policies or how to amend them, our public schools suffer. Parents lose confidence, we lose consistency, and funds disappear

We are better and stronger together.

The only way that our teachers will get paid a living wage is if we all support them and their collective bargaining.
Leon County Schools claims a $12.5M shortfall—yet increased its staffing budget by $6M. Meanwhile, 50+ jobs are being cut, and teacher raises are stalled. As usual, evidence points to bureaucracy—namely, Superintendents and district school boards acting as the bottleneck, NOT unions. 🙅🏻‍♀️

There has been $80,715 in raises for just eight people.

If Communications coordinator, is included that’s a total of $90,755.

Currently only raises that go before the board are when someone is reclassified. But the other raises do not.
