I have no particular insight, but difficult to know just how bad the situation is right now in many places. Hope you are right..

Yes, for many institutions that's around half of what was expected. And it's a fixed amount, meaning it doesn't automatically increase in line with inflation?

And I think the move is also not neutral in terms of revenue. It would be useful to see this impact modelled along with estimated additional income from an increases in undergrad fees in line with inflation year-on-year.

Yes, entirely agree with this.

These are HEPI estimates of the 20 institutions affected: I think this illustrates the impact if the tariff is absorbed in full by institutions.

What share of the 6% tariff different universities may try to pass on to fees - or the impact might be on demand if they did - is not publicly known.

But it shows how much money this will cost universities. Terrible policy (though some of it will be balanced by allowing universities to increase undergrad fees in line with inflation).

I think this is "just" the total cost of the 6% fee that was already announced, not a new levy.

Amazing - many congrats, Konstantin and co-authors!

Yes, absolutely. I didn't mean to say that it's easy on the editorial side - it puts a lot more work on editors. The only feasible way I think is to increase the number of associate editors & give them more power (but that's happening already in many places). Thanks for all the hard work.

I think (associate) editors shouldn’t let these papers reach reviewers. We need to up desk reject rates quite steeply given the at times dramatic increase in submissions, unfortunately.

A later day Tom Watson? 😂

I agree with all of this. I would say "if you think you are too busy to attend an internal/external seminar talk or go to a social event to meet colleagues, maybe think again". It's usually well invested time, especially for ECRs, and makes the job more fun.
