For an industry that should be all about respect for readers, it's such a manipulative, deceptive mess. I'm sure subscription pricing has nothing to do with the editorial side of things, but it's really off-putting.

Thanks for the reminder that I need to contact them to squawk! Here's what they sent us on 12/23: "Effective your next renewal date, your renewal charge will be $39.96, equivalent to $9.99 per week."

On more than one occasion when I worked with Phil at WKCR, he went out of his way to complement John Cipollina’s musicianship. I think it was his go-to exception-to-prove-the-rule when being generally dismissive towards guitar rock.

I’ve never seen “Night Moves”! I’m a longtime fan of “Long Goodbye and more recently saw “California Split” which I was very impressed with.

Consider taking Parkside to Bryn Mawr Ave to the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, also. Skips that Manayunk mess. (Will be even better in a few years, when the trail comes all the way down to 52nd and Parkside!)

The Rankin/Bass “Frosty the Snowman” is 1969 … w “Rudolph” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” these TV specials had long influence on popular culture and generations of American kids, and probably had something to do with the longevity of 1930s-40s Christmas songs.

“Feliz Navidad” is 1970, and José Feliciano might be tangential enough to the main narrative? and there’s lots (too much?) to say about Puerto Rican music’s increasing influence in rock in the late 60s-early 70s.

one of those bands I've heard about forever but never listened to. gonna listen now!

I’d definitely keep the two “L”s and lose the “I” … nobody wants a vile deli. Now I am trying to decide if the “W” is really a consonant in this context when all it does is change the “O” sound. Glad they had enough space to fully spell out “gourmet,” though!

Would be cool if this could be somehow aligned/integrated with resources like playinpossum.org or phillyshows.org

It’s a very fair question. There are services that will transfer your playlists for you. But I guess every bit of inertia and friction adds up? Even changing logins and getting used to new user interfaces is labor that people need to care enough to take on.

I’d love to see public libraries fill this niche eventually. It’s starting to happen in a few places. Pittsburgh is a good example www.carnegielibrary.org/research-ove...

their records got less good with those lineup changes, but who took the crown as a better live act?

I don’t disagree! But what changed for you in 1992?

"Tell Me What You See" may be my least favorite Beatles song and perhaps the last I ever heard because I knew the US "Help" first. It looms large in the "The Beatles Play The Residents" which I also heard beforehand, and I didn't recognize what it was from www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4Rd...

I feel like the ”Help” LP is under-discussed in general. It has so many top-tier songs and one of their best cover images, but somehow lacks identity. Too diverse in sound? Movie overlap? US vs UK tracklist butchering? Too much filler? Too much pianet?

Yeah, there are a lot of (overly) specific details in the new version that aren’t in the old one. “Sharpening” blurry images to the point that new objects are created is hard to feel good about.

In combination with the effect of recorded music, I also wonder if 20th-century media monoculture somehow created the context for stronger and more innovative countercultures?
(The linked essay had me until the anti-DEI whining and the part about how it would be more avant-garde to be racist.)

Isn’t the Keswick Theater near Regional Tail, too? I’m keeping a hopeful eye on the recently reopened Landsdowne Theater. Mostly tribute acts so far. (I agree that the real answer is get these shows back in the city!)

I used Fantastical for years but stopped a few months ago. Apple‘s default calendar apps have improved enough in that time that I don’t miss anything. Fantastical’s “smart” language processing basically never did what I wanted, and I got used to escaping with quote marks for almost every event.
