The Labour leadership has not only failed to challenge the anti-migrant, anti-multicultural narrative that’s been unleashed, it’s fed it. Its responses here to Farage’s extremely right wing speech compound that and leave the goal totally wide open for the far right. Disgraceful.

I’m away for a few days and not keeping up with everything but this by @adambienkov.bsky.social from a couple of days ago contains much to agree with.

The problem with this government line is that there is no moral case for it either, quite the opposite

Last night massively defeated by Reform in Tameside and the Greens in Haringey, the Labour right’s choices are the wrong ones for the majority of the population and causing a backlash in all directions.

The chancellor lauds an estimate on rising real household disposable income but the section is eye-opening. It’s projected to fall at first - main driver downward is the govt’s welfare cuts…
And the growth average across the forecast at 1% pa is v low. Squeeze remains.

On the Chancellor’s autumn figures, general government investment was projected to go into decline at -1.4% in 2029. On today’s it is -1.3% in 2029. ie general govt investment continues to be forecast to go down.

Labour is turning to substantial and more open conflict with the interests of working class people and its own electorate. It is a decisive phase in the course of the govt. As with previous Labour govts that chose such a disastrous course it has to be opposed

Labour is running this campaign ad in the Runcorn & Helsby by-election. The Labour party should be pressed to withdraw it immediately.

Less a u-turn than a swerve: government manoeuvres over the welfare cuts should not fool us into thinking they’ve done enough. The scale of the planned cuts is savage.

I’ve written here about the fight over the government’s planned cuts to welfare spending, the latest collision with its own base, flowing the Labour right’s economic framework.

It is eleven years since Tony Benn died.

I’ve been re-reading some of his diaries from the 1970s, covering the crisis of the Labour government. They are a useful resource in the context of the current government’s right wing course.

Quite pathetic. (Re welfare cuts).

Ed Davey’s proposal for British politics to speak with one voice in opposition to Trump is to push for Trump’s demand to raise military spending.

Doing what Trump demands on higher defence spending is not standing up to him, it’s doing his bidding.
