I think too of my grandad who slogged across Europe, my great uncle killed at Monte Cassino by his own side, my great grandad who dug the trenches for others to die in, and my friend Rupert Hamer murdered by the Taliban in 2010 because he went to war with a pen.

I’m not there this year, but every time when I see “glorious dead” it makes me furious. There’s no glory in death or sacrifice, and certainly none in the way the MoD treats its veterans. I vow again, like I do every year, to fight for those who fought for us.
