Unravelling the mystery of the missing blue whale calves
Only two blue whale births have ever been recorded in human history, an extraordinary mystery given they give birth every two to three years. Calves are also only rarely sighted—far less than would be...

Great lunch today with 3 visiting marine scientists in Timor-Leste to conduct research. There’s been growing interest and energy towards discovering what Timor-Leste’s ocean has to offer, and more support from international experts to assist the country with much-needed research and data.

Happy World Whale Day! 🩵🐋

Counting my blessings to be based in Timor-Leste, a cetacean hotspot where at least 1/3rd of the world’s cetacean species can be encountered as either resident or migratory populations 🥰🇹🇱

Killer whales have begun to migrate farther into previously icy regions of the Arctic, preying on narwhal, beluga, and bowhead.

Scientists say their increasing numbers could shift food webs in ways that affect both endangered whale populations and subsistence Inuit hunters.

I’m supposed to be studying a completely different topic tonight but who doesn’t get distracted by blue whale facts! 🤩
Blue whales make among the loudest calls of anything in the ocean... but killer whales cannot hear them at all because their calls are so deep. In my new paper I suggest this is an adaptation to reduce killer whale attacks.

Also… don’t paddle around feeding whales!! They’re pretty oblivious to your presence. Get out their way and let them do their whale thing!!
I heard that some of you people prefer to receive your snarky science fact-checking of viral news stories in meme format, and I am here to help.

New: Good news about AI. The ocean is a bulwark against climate change but most species remain unknown to science. Scientists created an AI-enabled robot to locate and track marine life and it's being trained by people playing a game called FathomVerse. Free link.
