This is on top of the fact we already had to spend a year apart, waiting for my income to count (my job in UEA only counted after 6 months). That's a year we'll never get back…

The extra five years of fees (already 10× those we paid in other countries), the chance that she might never get ILR (if she doesn't find or loses her job), and no entitlement to things like paid maternity leave and free childcare make it virtually impossible for us to start a family.

Thank you for your reply, and for your thoughtful comments in that debate. I just want to add that I work at UEA, but may end up forced to leave the UK (despite being British) because my wife no longer has a sensible pathway to settlement.

I agree with everything you said, except that much of it applies to all immigrant families. Why is it fair to move the goalposts for anyone? Why should families of British citizens have to overcome financial barriers, are only rich Brits allowed to live with their foreign loved ones?

The very first thing in this list is making my wife wait *at least* another 5 years to be able to settle in the UK (that is if her "contribution" is deemed satisfactory). That is not something to brag about 😡

The 3 earthquakes it identified did happen, but it completely misses the big picture. Also, 20 years is much too short a time to estimate seismic hazard—the biggest quakes have repeat intervals of 100s to 1000s of years. A competent geologist would point that out, a sycophantic LLM? Not so much…

Here's the map from the USGS of earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 and above for the last 20 years. There's hundreds, some over 4.5 (which has 1,000× the energy of a 2.5).

He will have to pay the health surcharge (which is functionally just a visa fee). My wife did. If there is a lower age limit, it's just for dependent children

I haven't watched it since it first came out, but I still think about it often (especially when things like this get proposed). I do remember being pretty devastated by it…

People keep saying Black Mirror, but there was an episode exactly about this. She first almost made her robot dead husband jump off a cliff, before locking him in the attic and only letting her daughter see him on special occasions…
