Great advice over on #ukteenchat tonight!
#UKteenchat Read widely is my no one recommendation. Not just what's in now, but the works that inspired contemporary writers. Go back in history, understand the context. If you can, read translated works as well. A whole world of different points of view awaits.

#UKteenchat I'm in the process of writing another novel in the same series as BINDING THE CUCKOO.
It's all stand-alones, but within the same social group, and with the same running theme of women hiding their true identity. The mythics liberation movement is also slowly gathering pace.

#UKteenchat I love working in cafes, especially if a friend can join me. Makes the process less lonely, more collaborative.
Especially with BINDING THE CUCKOO, I felt that a Gilded Age romance demanded a fancy cake and coffee to accompany its creation. All about the aesthetics 😂

#UKteenchat I'm a complete pantser for the first 1/3 of the book.
I usually begin with an image, or a poem.
BINDING THE CUCKOO began with two letters: sycophantic, wheedling, somewhat manipulative. I giggled the whole way through writing them.
The story tends to grow from there.

#UKteenchat My YT channel, THE GABRIELA HOUSTON PROJECT, explores how storytelling is a crucial part of everyone's life and many professions, more than we usually give credence to. I interviewed many artists, researchers, journalists, even a cult expert. It's been such an enriching experience

#UKteenchat That is a hard one! My MG duology, The Wind Child, is something I'm tremendously proud of, and something that felt very 'me'.
But I want to always push myself, and write about all the different aspects of human experience. Writing a romance well was always going to be a real challenge.

Not really - it wasn't the recipes themselves so much, as the sheer volume and variety served. Modern day London has a lot more to offer in terms of flavour. But not in terms of excess and splendour!

#UKteenchat Some of my favourite characters to write are always the little cameos in the margins: the precocious children with their cheeky chatter; the cantankerous old lady used to getting her way; the shallow buffoon with a soft heart... But people are multi-faceted, and I like writing surprises
