The court handled minor cases on the Las Vegas Strip, routinely imposing year-long bans from the area along with fines & fees. Instead of improving safety, this increased debt, court involvement, & barriers to stability for those already struggling.

Now, FCC has increased rate caps for phone & video calls — raising prices by as much as 83% & costing families an added $215M every year. Instead of protecting families, the Commission is profiting from their disconnection.

In 2024, the FCC unanimously adopted rules capping predatory call rates in prisons & jails, as required by the Martha Wright Reed Just & Reasonable Communications Act. This summer, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr delayed the new caps by 2 years, citing vague “negative, unintended consequences.”

In 2023, Pennsylvania's juvenile courts charged kids $311 on average, but families were only able to pay, on average, $166. Ending youth fines & fees would lift a huge weight off families, keep our communities safe, & give kids a real chance to move forward.
