Like I find it so weird when people on social media recount their sort of ideological journeys, and it’s like “paleoconservative, social democrat, Nazi, anarchocommunist, neocon, democratic socialist,” and it’s like *what do you personally actually believe?*

It got positive reviews because it is a fun time at the movies.

Like I said, I think it’s good to explore those ideas, see what works for you. It’s just that move from studying, making your own mental and moral universe richer, to adopting a thing wholesale and deciding to *be* it, that I don’t get at all.

Like who needs moral intuitions if you can cite chapter and verse from Marx or Hayek or whatever the hell? Those guys figured it out and I just do what they said and evangelize for them.

I think it’s good to study what people who came before thought about things and try on their ideas, see what fits; sometimes a pre-formed ideology mostly does, that’s fine. But so often it feels like people abandoning the ability to cultivate their own moral intuitions about the world.

Yeah, that makes it sound a bit silly, but the movie genuinely kicks ass.

Like it’s really easy to get lulled into thinking they’re having a policy debate when really they’re just trying to assert factional dominance by calling themselves more left than you and thereby command a host of upwards of a dozen nasty assholes to post pictures of a pig shitting in your replies.

My sons also got their belts, and two of them are way ahead of me, lol (green and purple; the third is still in little dragons mode). It’s been a really fun thing to do together with them.

Stuff like the guy with ten huge Trump flags took down 8, the guy with the Charlie Kirk memorial sign took it down. Small stuff that you wouldn’t notice if you weren’t looking for it, but is real.

Definitely fair, but also my anecdata in driving around rural Maryland is that there’s a bit fewer Trump signs and the occasional “fuck Trump” (not in those words exactly) sign. Not the absolute numbers but the movement.

I mean it as a genuine question! Like this is the same thing that Miller was saying on TV, but the government as a whole is not acting on it; it’s acting on other Miller priorities, but it does look a lot like a bunch of competing fiefdoms.
