The only problem is that that’s incredibly fucking stupid so of course I didn’t believe it. Here, look; another example. There was this big translucent plastic tub in the living room, right, and it was full of toys that mum and dad bought for my niece and nephew when they were still toddlers. And Adam and I used to rummage through it some nights because we were drunk and stupid and he would laugh and laugh at this say-the-alphabet book, which, when you pressed the button that made it say “A is for Apple” in its little tinny robot voice, sounded uncannily like it was saying “A is for Asshole”. And he loved that stupid fucking book so much. It never failed to make him laugh, laugh in that way of his where he shut his eyes tight and doubled over cross-legged on the floor, wracked with silent breathless mirth. And for the first two weeks after he died I used to sit in that room and I swear to you the book would go off by itself in the tub and chirp a muffled little “A is for Asshole” to the still silent air. How could that possibly be a coincidence? Well after two weeks of it going off every couple of hours I pulled the tub out and savaged my way through it, breathless, shaking, pulling out this toy and that until I found the book. It turned out that a heavier toy, some plastic fire engine or something, had been resting on top of it and pressing down on the button, and once I’d moved the fire engine off it it never sounded again. It really was just a coincidence. And the text was just a glitch."
