As the touch glided across his skin, he turned quickly, eyes locking onto air. From his other side, a voice. He turned quickly to face the woman.

“Sorry, I didn’t hear you walk up. I suppose we are a rare sight, especially out here.”

As he sat, Isaac closed his eyes, praying for some relief from the pain that ripped through his skull. Sleep sounded so nice right about now.

The little bit of water had done nothing to relieve his confusion or pounding headache. As he saw the doctor, he murmured, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”

He was speaking to no one in particular.

He nodded, standing albeit shakily.

“Thank you,” he mumbled, allowing her to guide him as he took shaky steps towards their destination.

“I… okay.” He couldn’t think straight but he didn’t have the strength to argue. He was so tired.

“We were… headed for Zion. Is that nearby?”

“I think… day.” He had been running for so long and their pilgrimage had been struggle for days before that.

“I can’t stop,” he stumbled forward before collapsing to his knees. “Off course,” he murmured, fingers digging into the cracked dirt.

He takes it, trying to collect his thoughts. “There’s… a monster out there.” He shakily sips from the canteen, mouth so dry it feels like the water can’t even soak in.

“Faceless, a reptile from hell. I had four men with me.“ He choked, coughing up water as he turned to fully face her. +

“I think so,” he murmured, eyes on the lake. Part of didn’t believe it. A mirage from the heat, but with the appearance of an angel from the dust… perhaps he had been heard.

It took a moment for his eyes to find the source of the voice and a small bit of clarity returned. “Are you real?”
