News from #UVQuant: New molecular MOT! A team at the FHI has succeeded in loading the first magneto-optical trap (MOT) of a spin-singlet molecule, diatomic AlF. This is the first time a chemically stable molecule has been laser-cooled and trapped.

🔬 For eight years they've worked hard in the lab to realize their dream: A research team from FHI's Molecular Physics Department finally succeded in laser cooling and trapping a chemically stable molecule - breaking new ground in ultracold physics.

As part of the Horizon 2021 project #UVQuanT, the team of Dr. Stefan Truppe at Imperial College London has demonstrated high-power (500 mW), continuous laser light at 231.7 nm. These new systems will be used for cooling and trapping AlF molecules, a new candidate for ultracold molecular experiments.

Our sporty team "Fritz" participated in the company run B2Run Berlin on September 18. The team tackled the 5.7 km course in and around the Olympic Stadium with athletic ambition and great team spirit. We're proud of everyone and looking forward to the next team event!
