They fake a lot of their own opinions to fit in, and since they’re the best people, they know none of us could be more sincere than they are.

I saw it in journals and letters from the 1820-40s while in college. Not sure when it drifted out of general usage; “a long time ago” is a good generalization.

This is a big part of how I use social media, preferentially following (apart from people I know or whose work I enjoy) people who keep reshaping neat stuff I wouldn’t otherwise encounter.
