Thanks. 😊

A lot of it is streamlined. I add in assessment details into weekly emails. It's rare for caregivers to get two emails from me about whole class stuff. It sounds like you communicate with your students' caregivers in other ways if this is extra.

Thank you @mattpitman.com.au and @eduskyauteam.bsky.social for a great first #EduSkyAU chat.

Will need to look into @deck.blue for the next one. Missed so many interesting side conversations.

A6: Making connections can also test personal and professional boundaries.

Be sure to know what your rights and responsibilities are in your contract/award.

Any compromises to boundaries need to be sustainable otherwise it's going to be exhausting.

Typo.

As well as an errant autocorrect. 🤦🏻‍♀️

A5: Prompt responses are not immediate responses. There's a difference and sometimes I have reminded parents that high school teachers have other classes to teach during the day as well as other responsibilities.

A5:
- Welcome email with my name, expectations of students, and encouraging caregivers to contact me with concerns.
- One weekly update of the class.
- One week notice of in-class assessments.
- Take Home assessments also get an email on release and submission dates.
- Prompt responses.

It ultimately helps with productivity.

I must sound like an economist right now.

A4: I'm not a social butterfly but at the same time happy to help with advice or collaborate on planning a unit or writing an assessment.

Ultimately, I don't mask who I am at work. However, I do separate work from home. 2/2

A4: I meet deadlines set with colleagues and not leave things to the last minute. It also means I don't over commit.

I fiercely protect my work life balance and moreso now that I'm a parent.

I don't do office chat beyond small talk. I want to do my work at work, not home.

But they work so well together.

It's also a delicate balance during assessment and feedback cycles.

A3: Connection to a class isn't just students to teacher but also student with the other students. The latter needs scaffolding and nurturing to occur. It's ludicrous to expect kids to come to class with the skills to do this in any sized school. Personality clashes exist. #EduSkyAU

A3: I use lots of low stakes collaborative work to answer questions I pose to the whole class. I group students differently for tasks via Think, pair share. Shoulder partners. Birthday month groups, (some months need to be broken into weeks sometimes). 1/2

I find being predictable to be the most efficient way to buld trust. The kids know that I'll learn their name like all their other teachers. What they really want to know is whether they'll be safe and treated fairly before anything else.

A1: Connection means that there is a respectful relationship in the context of the roles of teacher and student. It's not a friendship but something that allows both parties to view each other as people with value. Without it means conflict, a lot of paperwork, and a lack of time. #EduSkyAU
