In the cracks between my teeth, where my prayers take shape. In the hollow of my palms, where they are answered. FATIMA ABDULLAHI Fatima Abdullahi is a writer across genres She won the 2025 Isele Poetry Prize, placed second in the 2023 Dreamfoundry Emerging Writer's Contest, and was runner up in the 2023 Valiant Scribe Poetry Competition. She was also one of the five winners of the Abebi Afro-nonfiction Award for her essay "Roots." Her carefully crafted works have appeared in several literary spaces, including: Dark Matter Magazine, Augur Magazine, Midnight & Indigo, Isele Magazine & Lolwe, among others. She stands for truth and freedom from oppression, and is a staunch advocate of the Palestinian cause.

Each piece in the trio explores loss from different angles--ageing, the death of a father, and emotional detachment in mourning-with imagery that is tender, raw, and hauntingly memorable. The poems are remarkable not only for their technical control and intertextual references (from Dylan Thomas to Diana Der-Hovanessian), but also for their ability to collapse vast emotional landscapes into intimate, carefully wrought lines. Abdullahi's voice is clear-eyed and compassionate, making space for silences shadows, and the unspoken ways grief reshapes us. Roots that Abide by Fatima Abdullahi Yani was six years old the first time he heard a house talk. Perhaps it had happened earlier, before he learned to push words out of his mouth, but that was the first he could really remember. He'd climbed out the window to slip his legs through the balcony's rusted railings while his mother aggressively cleaned the apartment when a hoarse voice said wearily, Do you think she could be more careful? My floors aren't what they used to be. He'd stood suddenly, limbs jerking in surprise, & his mother-just days from escaping his father's cruel fists-had jumped a foot in the air, clutching the broom in her hand. He eyed the run-down building. "Mama, the house wants you to be more gentle." "Oh," his mother said, blinking "Alright." And tell her it's alright to hurt, the house said gently, at the disregard of those who should care. She doesn't have to keep the pain in anymore. She's free. Yani relayed the message, & watched his mother shudder & sink to the floor, her face buried in her hands.

I wrote parts of this essay while at the Abebi Award Residency & I'm so happy M & I saw it's value & gave it a home 🥹

Like Chinonso Nzeh lamented so heart wrenchingly in his award winning essay, my mother is “slipping away.”

Long time no post but guess who just won her first award for nonfiction? That's right, ME!! 🥹

For the past 3 days, I've been at the Abebi Award for Afro-nonfiction writer's Residency & I can honestly say my life has been changed beyond measure. I love these women so much & will cherish them always!

(talks about a DELAYED response, right?) it was so true to her character and her sibling dynamic with Rand, chastising him one last time because she really did love that boy, it just took a while before she remembered it. Which is exactly how family are DAMN YOU, JORDAN. DAMN YOU.

In happy news I just got my first nonfiction acceptance in Midnight and Indigo 🎉🎉

This essay is very dear to me, & it took a lot of courage on my part to put it out there. It confronts the expectations upon northern, muslim women, & what that means l to me. I can't wait for y'all to read it!
