From The Ashes

A long-form #startrek fan-project chronicling the fall and rise of the Romulan empire though the Hobus disaster to the establishment of the Romulan Republic.

As an aside Cai’th’lin had partial human ancestry, from a grandfather who had been taken captive as a child on Deneva during the Earth-Romulan war. She would claim to be of Irish descent during her career though there is no evidence she was: her given name has its roots in Rihan for compassion.

Her reputal of her goverment's unification plan is one of the clearest evidence of wide-spread discord regarding the foreign policy of the late Third Republic. The fact that she did so and lived shows just how high that discord went.

By the 2360s she was considered the grandee of what amounted to the Romulan diplomatic corps and the head of the Committee for Interstellar Correspondence, the closest thing the Third Republic had to a foreign service think tank.

Cai’th’lin t’Dar was a Romulan diplomat famous for her involvement in the Nimbus III incident of 2287, the Khitomer conferences in the 2290s and as the penultimate Romulan ambassador to Earth before the Tomed incident and subsequent Romulan isolation in 2315.

"We are facing a long and bitter war. But we shall met it, met it as we have faced every battle, every struggle, every challenge since we first time took our tender steps in the skies.

We are the Romulan Star Empire! And our shadow will blot out the very sun of Cardassia before we are done."

"This is a war that will force us to work with those we once considered enemies. Our old foes expect us to show weakness in front of them: let everyone know that the Rihannsu are no one's fools."

"To those living under the protection of the Raptors Wings I say: this is your war too! The founders do not care for your race or creed, only your subjugation. The Senate guarantees reward for your service , the founders nothing but your destruction. Only together can we survive this treachery! "

"This will not be an easy or short struggle but our people are used to hardship! I call on everyone to do their part for the war-effort! Our fleets need soldiers and our armies warriors. Our shipyards need skilled hands and our hospitals gifted healers. We are each responsible for our part."

"This was not a war we sought! For the longest time we worked to stymy the march of the Dominion, to keep them to their side of the wormhole even as others dithered. Only when clear that their foothold was made and that no one else would rise to the challenge did we make peace."

"In response to this agression the senate have ordered a full mobilisation and I am pleased to report that our forces have already struck the first blows against this treacherous enemy. They will learn that we are not to be taken lightly and will cower in fear of the appearance of our Warbirds!"
September 21, 2025 at 1:29 PM
"This was not a spontanous act, for the Senator was returning to Romulus with proof that the Dominion plans on extending their war to our homes. In violation of our treaty of nonaggression the founders have been plotting against us. Foul is the day when these shapeless beings stand against you."

"I hold in my hand the final report from the Tal Shiar investigation into the death of our brother, the honorable senator Vreenak tr'Merken, a report that proves without a doubt that he was fouly murdered by the hand of the Dominion and their Cardassian lackies."

OTD in 2374:

"My fellow declared, Citizens and Subjects of the Romulan Empire. Grave are the tidings which I bring, for it is with the authority of the Senate of the Romulan people that I hereby must declare that a state of war exists between the Romulan Republic and the Dominion."

The rise of Ael t'Rllaillieu heralded the Second Empire. The empress oversaw some neccesary reforms, the beginning of exploration into the deep Beta quadrant and a period of hitherto unknown opening to the surrounding galaxy, only to be forced to close the gates after the Tomed incident in 2311.

The Second Republic fought, lost and yet somehow survived the war against Earth and its allies, a massive uprising of demobilized Reman troops and decades of skirmishes with the Klingons. Its fall came when rebellious outmarches flew on the capital in 2276 and installed an unlikely figurehead

The Second Republic, while more inclusive then the First Empire, was still very much a oligarchy and continued the expansionistic policies of the Valkis. It was this state that made first contacts, first with the Klingons in 2080 and then most faithfully, with their long dreaded Vulcan cousins

The last emperor, Shiarkar tr'Valkis, was famously paranoid and established a new security service, the Tal Shiar. It would not avail him: like so many dictators he fell to the blades of his own security service on the stairs of the Senate during the tumult that gave rise to the Second Republic.

It was during the First Empire that the Romulans charted multiple stellar phenomena such as the Eightfold stars and finally invented warp technology, as well as inventing the policy of dealing with the hearthworlds landless by shipping them offworld.

It was the founding of Romulus first out of system colonies and first contact with alien species that heralded the creation of the first empire under the Valkis dynasty. This monarchy would rule for the next three centuries, slowly expand the Romulan domain.

The period saw the fall of the last great colony ships that had carried the exiles to Eisn and a short technological "dark age" as small scale warfare became endemic. However its later centuries would see unity and the reclaiming of interstellar spaceflight, including the founding of the Star Navy.

T'Rehu's overthrow her overthrow (largely by protoreman troops) heralded the coming of the First Republic, arguably the longest lasting goverment system in Romulan history. This is of course because it is a misnomer: the First Republic was only marginally unified, the senate closer to old earths UN

Crop failures and the strain of establishing the "food for minerals" system with Remus led to the first senate being formed, only to be quickly overthrown by the Ruling Queen Vriha t'Rehu. Her (tyrannical) regime would form the first centralised goverment and build the first real Romulan state.

The Founding Century consisted of the rough hundred or so years after the landing of the first colonists in 361 CE. These were the years when the Exiled Vulcans began to adapt to their new worlds. It was a time of isolated communities living a hardscrabble pionering life, with no real central power.

Periodization is the boon and bane of the study of any civilization and so it is with the Romulan empire. Broadly speaking historians tend to recognize seven distinct pre Hobus eras: the Founding Century, the First Republic, the First Empire, Second Republic, Second Empire and Third Republic

Romulan scoutship, sifting through these debris eventually started to piece together the Taurhai's story as they moved cautiously into the center of the old Unity. Emergency beacons, log buoys and databases sifted through and eventually a few fleeing refugees were encountered.
