I think there is 100 other ways to resolve that issue, on top of simply not making a encounter that dangerous even in the worst case scenario.

Reading the 1e Boxset for the FR makes it clear why FR is one of the most popular settings in dnd, it was geniunely amazing and designed to easily make adventures and stories for ttrpg without getting in the way. Sadly the metaplot bloat, and too much timeline moving killed it.
