5/6 Spying on protestors is something that LE has regularly done. The identity of protestors varies, but the tactic remains constant. They have monitored Black Lives Matter, Environmental Protestors, Socialist Gun Owners, racial justice activists, anti-ICE demonstrations. The list is long.

4/6 Folks may remember that the NYPD famously spied on Muslim communities w/o suspicion of criminal activity. A lot of this was informant driven, but now has moved mostly online. But it wasn't just the NYPD, the FBI was doing the same things. It just didn't get the same level of heat.

3/6 The FBI has broad authority to open investigations w/o any suspicion of criminal activity. This was one of the big changes post-9/11 & gives them open-ended domestic intel authority. See this report from @brennancenter.org for more details. www.brennancenter.org/media/9880/d...

2/6 How did they get into the Signal chat? They could have hacked in using spyware (see this recent report from @epic.org epic.org/wp-content/u...). More likely they had an informant in that group.
