i don't wanna make sweeping generalising statements like "this game is a little bit dumb" just yet but it definitely feels antithetical to like everything i enjoyed about adventure. at least it's still one of the prettiest games ever

for racing: lego racers 1 is short and silly. trackmania is a time trial series i'm really fond of, my fave (i.e. the only one i played since i was small :p ) being united forever. i found pilotwings 64 a fun flight time trialler but maybe a little disconnected from 'racing' lol

it's a game that feels like it wants you to be everywhere at once in a way that leads to really interesting decision making. well probably i haven't really gotten to that point yet :p

really tricky really quickly. you wanna be as low as possible so you can upwards torpedo other subs from below, but you also want to be on the surface so you can stop aircraft from flooding the screen with torpedoes. and going from top to bottom with underwater enemies around is really really hard

i saw kirby super star games have separate entries recently and giggled. who up playing spring breeze and then turning the game off forever

it's also a no-continues arcade game that i feel like i can actually make enough of a dent in to see the cool bits early lol. so i actually feel motivated to keep playing to get better. that's always nice

using pickup weapons is performed by jumping, so there's a layer of strategy to not trap yourself in a bad spot out of reach of anything by routing to jump as little as possible where needed. "single screen with scroll" is pure evil but straining my attention a lot in a good way lol

i like a good evil notetaking game (<3 <3 <3 la-mulana), but admittedly i do think realising it might not be as harsh as people say has made me more interested in it atm lol

what got me thinking about zelda 1 again is... hearing for years that metroid 1 is a map-drawing game, and then having committed basically all of it to memory. and having that reframe literally anything anyone ever said about this one
