There are deeper reasons why Austin will never overtake Silicon Valley - other world-class research institutions in the Bay Area, and California’s labor law - no non-competes, and employees do not surrender rights to IP they create with their own time and materials.

UT Austin is a great regional university. It creates a good local elite. It has a national reputation in some disciplines. It is not in the same global league as Stanford or Berkeley or Tsinghua.

I think we’ve all experienced inadvertently finding out Rule 34 applied to something sufficiently disturbing, that we can sympathize if that indeed was Jesus’s motivation.

Was once on a project where I realized the Chinese engineers we were working with could build the second generation of their pilot plant faster than I could get a report about their first generation plant through our publication review process.

It’s not the rare earth ores - it’s the scale, and the fact that the Chinese engineers have had decades to come down the experience curve on costs.
Chinese process engineers are really, really good. And they build a lot of plants, so they learn a lot.

Having worked with a few HBS alumni, I will say one of my life goals is never to work with one again.
Stanford, Yale, MIT etc. B-school alumni are fine. But HBS grads have a unique ability to fuck up royally and fail upwards leaving former colleagues to pick up the wreckage.

Yes! Folks who think Aragorn is the hero of the Lord of the Rings, rather than Sam and Frodo. Or that the most important thing Gandalf does is kill the Balrog, rather than chewing out Frodo when he says that Bilbo should have killed Gollum. So later Frodo spares Gollum, and this saves Middle-Earth.
