In a creative rut.
I was suggesting mapping Line X Optim Mode forward and backward to currently unassigned buttons, but mapping each mode to a profile would give me a quick switch in the meantime. Only thing is I'm using all my onboard profiles on different consoles. Does P. load work for SD Profiles, too?

That's okay for most games, but for Symphony of the Night, Sonic Jam, and Genesis games that switch between 256 and 320 modes it's kind of clunky. Ideally the Pro could auto detect and switch, but that's probably much more challenging to implement. Remote shortcut keys would be a great compromise.

That's unfortunate to hear, but I appreciate the information nonetheless.

On the topic of games that frequently switch 240p widths, I would deeply appreciate shortcut keys on the OSSC Classic/Pro remotes for setting the 240p optimized mode. Currently these settings are pretty deep in the OSD.

It's hard to explain, but the pre-production model (you can tell if your motherboard has addtional memory mounted on a daughterboard) has weird off spec sync or something that causes the GEM to show those green flickering lines in the overscan area and whenever the screen "blanks."

Double check your motherboard revision is compatible. Also, be aware that the HDMI and RGB mods are mutually exclusive. Also, make doubly sure your FZ-1 console is NOT a pre-production model. Mine was, and it has annoying graphical artifacts for both RGB and HDMI mods.

Education is something I really worry about. At what point does generative AI constitute plaigarism? If AI writes even part of someone's essay or code for them, how much credit does the human deserve? Ethically, how does it differ from other automated tools like templates, snippets, or auto correct?
November 23, 2025 at 11:39 PM
No, I think you're just correct on this. It is the current techbro obsession the way NFTs and Metaverse were in years past. These companies dumped millions into building AI tools on the vague premise that it was going to be "the future." Now they're trying to get returns on their investment.

Moreover, digital-to-digital HDMI is great because it's plug and play. I don't have to fiddle with advanced timings to get a great picture. And the picture itself is digital, meaning no analog noise.

Basically, I want the same quality and ease of use I can get on PlayStation on Saturn as well.
November 23, 2025 at 9:45 PM
This used to be a problem with recording PlayStation as well, as games like Symphony of the Night switch resolutions constantly whenever you pause and unpause. The RetroGEM /PS1Digital automatically switch resolutions and upscale the games without me having to do anything.

The Saturn can switch between four video widths. Sonic Jam does this between menus and the games. To record it correctly, I have to switch the sampling preset on my scaler along with the game in real time. However, I often don't know when this will happen, or what mode it will switch to.
November 23, 2025 at 9:39 PM
Analog video, no matter how good quality, has some amount of video and audio noise. When using a scaler, you have to dial in the advanced timings so that it matches the video you're sampling, otherwise it will look blurry. Dongles are worse because they don't let you set these timings yourself.
November 23, 2025 at 9:39 PM
Some folks have been replying with links to those HDMI dongles that plug directly into the AV out. Those aren't true HDMI. They take the RGB analog video and convert it to digital, same as a discrete scaler like the RetroTink or OSSC would.

What I want is a digital-to-digital mod like the RetroGEM.
November 23, 2025 at 9:31 PM
I should clarify; I want a digital-to-digital HDMI mod. This and other dongles like it are an analog to digital converter. I already have several scalers like the OSSC Pro that can do that in higher quality with more customization.

More info on why true HDMI is preferred:

The reason I like HDMI mods isn't just the quality (no analog noise). The Saturn has 256, 320, 364, 640, and 752 widths in 240p and 480i. On a scaler, I have to dial in the timings for each mode and then go through the clunky OSD to switch modes whenever the game does. HDMI mods do that for me.
November 23, 2025 at 9:28 PM
I'm guessing you're talking about those wack, nonstandard resolutions used by expansion pak games in high resolution mode, like how Turok 2 and 3 have a 480x232 option. Otherwise, I've rarely seen width switching in 240p games.

Scalers and RGB-to-HDMI dongles give great quality; I have a csync SCART cable for my Saturn and a OSSC Pro to upscale it. I'm not a fan of the RetroTink, though. After using the OSSC scalers for years, the RT was missing bare basic features when I used it. There wasn't an advanced timing menu IIRC.
November 23, 2025 at 3:53 PM
I record games in native res in lossless avi and upscale later with ffmpeg CLI batch files. The issue with realtime scaling is that if you set the scaling or encoding parameters incorrectly, you have to re-record. Plus, programs like Recentral and OBS lack advanced encoding options like CRF.

It took until comments on my Sunshine video to learn that Bowser Jr. wasn't the 8th child, but had retconned the Koopalings to something else; the rereleases of the old games weren't updated to reflect it. To my recollection, the games themselves never outright state what they are to Bowser.
November 19, 2025 at 1:17 PM
I never realized "Koopaling" was a retronym until now. My first exposure was Advance 2 (released the same year as Sunshine), where in this foldout poster (that I distinctly remember for some reason) they're called Koopalings.

Curiously in Advance 4 they're still called Bowser's children.

I guess this is November's "random bleet that gets uncharacteristically high engagement out of nowhere."
