And, its direct targets have been well studied (here is one paper amongst many: elifesciences.org/articles/71533). do we understand any part of biology in utter mechanistic detail - not really (not sure the best systems; perhaps some catalytic mechanisms) -definitely not maintenance of pluripotency

That's definitely a bad rendering (i don't know where it is from). It looks like a pretty sane DNA binding protein from the (quite a few) protein structures out there. I wouldn't take Wikipedia's choice of protein structure as the best choice (UniProt a far better aggregation point)
