The lighting is terrible, I look scruffy but I’ve lost 5kg since NYE and I’m gonna eat some tacos.

Today in 2019 I first encountered a Cassowary and he was huge.

New Avengers 1 because the villains are fascinating even if I don’t really care about the team members.

Just counting down the days until summer.

Search For Cyclops 1-4 - Glorious nonsense from 2001 in which Jean Grey and Cable hunt down Cyclops who has been host to Apocalypse since the climax of The Twelve. Incredibly anti-climatic ending though.
All part of my @xplainthexmen.bsky.social read-along.

Aww, today in 2019 I was just kicking off three months travelling and hanging out in Bali.

Up at 6am and on the Peloton because that’s what we do in January. Oh, and this year we’re definitely going to keep it up all year. Lol 😉

I’m more of a Marvel boy so I’m always looking for obvious DC reading gaps to fill-in and this feels like the Legion version of the Wolfman/Perez run on Teen Titans. Looking forward to getting in to the Great Darkness saga.

New reading project. Kicking off the Paul Levitz run of Legion of Super-Heroes. There’s so much love for the Legion and it’s a massive reading blind spot for me so this should be a fun ride.

The final comic I bought in 2025 is a bit of a special one. Silver Surfer: Parable. Another edition of the out-of-print hardcover classics but I comic I love so much I even bought the t-shirt.

Working towards my 2025 best and beyond.

Incredible stuff. I swear I’ve read HOXPOX like five times. We’ll never see the likes of it again.

And that’s a wrap on 2025. Another year where your favourite nerd bought too many foil covers, Skottie Young variants, Marvel Premiere Classics on eBay and hardcovers. So let’s do it all again in 2026.

And if you’re wondering about the 58 Image comics I read Jeff Lemire & Andrea Sorrentino’s horror comic Tenement and started a read through of the classic Astro City.

The Absolute comics are all excellent and all for massively different reasons. Absolute Martian Manhunter was a crazy read with a twist I didn’t see coming. Meanwhile Absolute Superman is a reflection of the world we live and Wonder Woman is a beautiful, different take on the character.

I also reread Planetary which remains one of the greatest comics I’ve ever read. DC attempted a sort-of sequel that was a nice homage with The Outsider but never quite hit the same heights as the original. Oh and Jenny Sparks came back and got one of the best lines in comics history.
January 2, 2026 at 10:09 PM
I thought Absolute Power trashed Amanda Waller’s character but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. But the All In special certainly set us up for more interesting stories than the power swap premise we ended up with.

Over at DC, @tomking.bsky.social continues to write my favourite comics. I’m loving his run on Wonder Woman and I don’t want it to end and Danger Street was a fantastic read.

One of my all-time faves though it does take some weird turns after the first 12 issue arc. And I always love the idea of Charles turning evil and deciding to wear a long black wig. And it’s never referenced in the text! 😂

I caught up with all of the Ultimate universe titles and Spider-Man is the clear stand-out. The whole thing is a good concept but I struggle to see how Ult. X-Men and Ult. Wolverine exist in the same universe. Best just to enjoy the ride I guess.

I read through Byrne’s Fantastic Four run and what a run. It’s a classic for a reason. Galactus gets a new herald and goes on trial, Doom gets an heir and Sue briefly becomes the villain Malice. Unfortunately it ends far too abruptly but it’s a stunning read while it lasts.

My @xplainthexmen.bsky.social read-along took some interesting turns. The Twelve was meh, Gen X and X-Force came to an end, Claremont came and left, we took a detour to the excellent Mutant X and Magneto got up to his usual on Genosha. Next year, Morrison’s run and X-Statix!

A huge part of my reading this year was my Krakoa-era reread. Like every X-Men era there’s duds among the high points but the premise was revolutionary and gave us some of the best comics of the last few years. Also the ending really does benefit from a binge read.
