My sister and I spent summers living on the train. The other cooks were Navajo, as were a majority of the "gangs" that worked the tracks. Most of them hailed from Shiprock, NM. I learned how to weave a Navajo rug, and my grandma had a ton of native hand made jewelry.

My grandparents worked for Union Pacific in the 70s. They were cooks for the rail workers. They made 3 grand a month EACH, they didn't work winters. I saw a copy of my grandma's pension check (yeah, they had PENSIONS) and it was 1500. Half her salary.
