If I were deliberately trying to cause vulnerable refugees as much distress as possible, this is how I would do it. Constantly shifting the ground underneath them, never allowing them a moment of certainty and stability. This is barbarism.

In synthetic experiments with prescribed signal-to-noise ratios, we find that new scoring rule–based estimators agree with the classical ones on whether the signal-to-noise ratio is anomalous or not. In application to the North Atlantic Oscillation, the results are more equivocal. (3/3)

This information-theoretic framework provides a new interpretation of the signal-to-noise paradox in climate forecasting, and could lead to more robust statistical tests for it. Additionally, it allows for the definition of a signal-to-noise ratio for categorical forecasts. (2/3)
