Renaissance and early modern material culture. Writing on skin, dogs with earrings, and some of the other more surprising oddities of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Europe. All posts my own personal views.
I didn't know about Marasol Escobar and her work before, so this remarkable exhibition at the @louisianamuseum.bsky.social near Copenhagen has been a real eye opener. It shows the complexity of the work she did from the 1960s and 70s and just how hard it was to be a female artist at the time.

A privilege to introduce Professor Bronwyn Wilson's keynote lecture on 'Mediterranean Itineraries' for the @srsrensoc.bsky.social. A brilliant start to four days of things #Renaissance and #earlymodern in Bristol

At the University of Bologna today for a meeting of the Coimbra group of European Universities. Great talks and a sharing of challenges and perspectives. But best of all...the Rector has a 16thc portrait of Gaspare Tagliacozzi in his office, which features his treatise on rhinoplasty. #earlymodern

And in other news...the rambling rector roses are spectacular this year!

And of course I thought the textiles were the stars.of the show! Congratulations @carolinecampbell.bsky.social, Joanna Cannon and the many others who made the London version of this show so remarkable.

Was fascinated by details such as the Virgin Mary's dangling earring...

The Siena show at the @nationalgalleryldn.bsky.social deserves all the praise it is currently receiving. A stunning array of paintings, sculpture, textiles, and gold work, it makes the argument for this small city as the launchpad for a new approach to the visual and material arts in the 1300s.

A stunning day out yesterday at the Bath Fashion Museum stores. They hold an exceptional collection of 17th-century gloves and other embroidered items. You can really follow a shift from metal thread to ribbons and appreciate the meticulous stitches that gave each glove their shape. #earlymodern

Just arrived in the post (had to queue up at the post office depot but it was worth it!)...a privilege to be part of this book which packs in so much information and examples of how you learn from materials and remaking. Congratulations, @sarahabendall.bsky.social and @serenadyer.bsky.social.

So much fun to host @trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social. The audience turnout is amazing and indicates the appetite for Trish's insights into how we make healthcare, particularly primary healthcare, work in the UK. Today, we aren't treating the patient - we are treating the patient's digital record.

Every year, just when it seems it couldn't get any darker and colder, Bristol holds a light festival- this year, we have flamingos in City Hall's fountain! Very cheering for an early February late afternoon.

With @acuto.bsky.social at the Christmas social....anyone for an Xmas jumper competition?

Ooh...wonderful detail. Where is it from? Lots of dogs with earrings in Lavinia Fontana's work (she even puts them on the heads of her zibellini...).

Small but beautifully selected show @royalacademy.bsky.social. Strong visual arguments for impact Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael had on each other in Florence in 1504. M & L's twisting christ child and Raphael drawings after both artist's work (Leda by L. and M's standing nude) make the case.

A moment of contemplation with Luke Jerram's 'Gaia' installation in Bristol Cathedral.

Wonderful to catch up with three amazing women running UK universities while we were all in Manchester. Only a few years ago, such an encounter would have been very unusual. Great to see Wendy Larner (Cardiff), Karen O'Brien (Durham) and Lisa Robert's (Exeter) @timeshighered.bsky.social

I came to the @warburginstitute.bsky.social in 1981, where Jennifer Montagu ruled the photographic collection (and much more). Such a pleasure to catch up with her at the opening of the Institute's remarkable redevelopment. Aby Warburg would be proud. What a transformation! #earlymodern

Finishing a great day with a discussion about what will happen when the painting returns to Compton Verney in Warwickshire. Very appropriately the painting will be displayed in the Women's Library with additional materials to provide greater context.

@jillburke.bsky.social is up next on 'belle donne', such as the Mancini sisters painted by Voet in 1661. Physicians take cosmetics seriously - publishing extensive recipe collections. Beauty spots disrupt the way you read the #earlymodern body..

@ering.bsky.social leads off on our final panel on women's expertise in cosmetics and beauty. Beautification is a performative task for and amongst women. Erin finishes by promising to tell us later how to collect May Dew as a face wash - the only thing Peyp's wife used! ##earlymodern
