Opinions my own
Today is World Refugee Day, so I wanted to share some lines from my book, DAUGHTERS OF SHANDONG, which is based on my grandma’s experience as a refugee fleeing China’s Civil War.

I think of the refugees today, who escape horrific conditions, only to be met with hostility.

No person is “illegal.”

DAUGHTERS OF SHANDONG is a book that I was only able to write after becoming a mother. Before that, there were decisions that my parents made that I didn’t understand. I’ve realized that motherhood means learning a new type of love language—and sometimes, that means knitting a hat for an octopus.

Civilians are not a target. Hospitals are not a target. Refugee shelters are not a target. Schools are not a target. The 89 UN workers killed thus far should not have been targets.
