Students from less well-off families are, on average, 2.6× more likely to work to afford studying than those from very well-off backgrounds.

The gap is huge in some countries:
🇩🇪 Germany: 9.3×
🇷🇴 Romania: 5.8×
🇭🇷 Croatia: 5.2×
🇨🇿 The Czech Republic: 5.1×

Did you know that in all but 4 EUROSTUDENT countries, the share of students living with parents among those with low educational background is below the national average for all students❓

Students who study beyond the standard period of study:
🔹 have a lower sense of belonging
🔹 are less likely to rate their academic performance better than that of their fellow students
🔹 are more likely to consider dropping out than those still within the standard period of study.

Students’ self-earned income is the single most important source of income in 54% of the #EUROSTUDENT countries. This is true for the 🇨🇿 Czech Republic, 🇨🇭 Switzerland, 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇳🇱 the Netherlands, 🇲🇹 Malta, 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇦🇹 Austria, 🇮🇸 Iceland, 🇫🇮 Finland & 🇳🇴 Norway.

🔹 At HEIs with few STEM programs, women make up 57%+ of students.
🔹 At STEM-heavy institutions, men are the majority in nearly every country — averaging 2/3 of the student body. The only exception is 🇸🇰 Slovakia.

Across EUROSTUDENT countries, 26% of students face an accommodation cost overburden.
International students report it even more often than domestic ones. The burden is also heavier for those relying on public student support. Also, students w. financial difficulties are far more likely to struggle.

When looking at students' time budget, 🇱🇻 Latvian and 🇵🇱 Polish students top the charts, spending 54 hours/week on study & work — compared to just 41 hours in 🇫🇷 France. On average, part-time students clock 10 more hours weekly than full-timers, mostly due to working nearly 3× as much (32h vs 11h).

Older students = happier students?
According to the EUROSTUDENT 8 data, students aged 30+ report the highest well-being scores (avg. 56 points) vs. 50 points for younger peers.

Did you know that students in the fields of 🧑‍🏫 Education as well as 💼 Business, Administration & Law more often engage in part-time, distance, or online studies compared to those in other subject groups? Not surprisingly, 💻 ICT students especially stand out with high levels of online learning.

💸 🫰 Working students earn a median of 811 PPS/month (PPS: Purchasing Power Standard), but income varies widely across the countries — it's highest in 🇲🇹 Malta, lowest in 🇩🇰 Denmark.
In most countries, male students earn more than female students: partly due to working about an hour more per week.

Young students and those relying on public support are more likely to live in student housing. Especially in the Netherlands, Slovakia & the Czech Republic, many students dependent on public support live in dorms. Students who regard themselves as ‘workers’ live in student accommodation less often.

Across all E:8 countries, 1/3 of students with 👶 have a youngest child under the age of 6. Most of the young children under 6 can be found in Denmark, Germany, Finland, Iceland, Austria & Switzerland and particularly in Azerbaijan & Georgia, where the share is more than 80%.

Did you know that in 🇮🇸 Iceland (62%), 🇩🇰 Denmark (52%), and 🇸🇪 Sweden (49%), many students arrive at university with serious work experience (1+ year, 20+ hrs/week)?

23% of all students report a (very) negative impact of the COVID-19 on the financing of their studies. The share ranges from a bit more than 10% in Lithuania to more than 33% in Portugal. Most students reported no or even positive impact, but remember that these results don't include dropouts.
