Frankfurt am Main, Brit, Scot, German.

Controller, coffee drinker, father of two, trying to get back into swimming (again!)

Wish my German was better.
Sounds like it would be super unpopular.

The sugar rush from these initial films has spawned a channel that is now just part of our culture - through toys, games, series, books, comics. It's very accessible and everywhere.

In some ways, Harry Potter has gone the same way (everywhere). Quality is variable to the sheer quantity.

Episode 4 absolutely rewrote sci-fi films at the time and Episode 5 cemented its legacy. Episode 6 was good without having impact of first 2 films. Everything since then has been chasing the highs of those movies with very varying success.

Maybe as much that China isn't creating the surplus profits to increase its holdings of foreign debt. Question is whether it's holdings of other foreign debt moving.

This might mean that China finding it more difficult to keep Yuan weak.

Maybe we can start the new year before the next one?!

Interesting that many countries (Japan) have programmes to move people out of cities into rural areas whilst China is doing the opposite!

In fact, US withdrawal from ICJ strengthened the authority of the ICJ as it didn't back down.

Maybe reaction to US reliability might also strengthen norms!

International law is forged in consensus. In reality, it's what happens when nobody is looking. It'll survive the US. It survived US withdrawal from ICJ!

It feels like at least the 3rd cycle of Trump threatening to cut intelligence and weapons this year.

Have to see what happens.

Even if he cuts off Ukraine, nothing to say that he puts them back on later as things change.

GIGO

I am reminded of the 2010 Reinhart and Rogoff paper.

Not sure that the number of medicine places in UK or Germany has materially increased in decades. The need for more medical staff was always going to increase with larger, older population.

Just winging it hasn't worked.

As Americans say we need to focus on blocking and tackling!!!

And then?

Given the unstable ceasefire in Gaza, will any deal be implemented? If not implemented, what will be Trump's reaction if both sides (especially the Russians) just keep on fighting?

To me, this brings into question forecasting. How next year must be forecast to be just as good if not better than the last despite what underlying conditions tell us!

In many ways, China has normalised. It is now a significant economy with its own car industry. The arbitrage moment for foreign car makers into China has closed. Germany tends to buy German cars and the French - French cars. Why would we not expect China to prefer Chinese cars?!
November 21, 2025 at 10:15 AM
Agreed. And that's when government should be more active in either regulating/auditing or nationalising. I would argue that for defence equipment that you are more looking at procurement regulatory strategies as there are some export possibilities.
November 20, 2025 at 4:01 PM
Just to add, government should have a role to increase number of suppliers using government procurement.

Perfectly competitive is very theoretical agreed.

But for a good degree of competitiveness, any industry with 6 to 10 suppliers. Car industry would be one. I also working with control systems where you had Siemens, ABB, Honeywell, Emerson, Yokogawa plus others. That was competitive.
November 20, 2025 at 3:50 PM
Markets are better over time where competition drives innovation and weeds out poor performers. But not every market is perfectly competitive and has the capacity for such levels competition. Therein lies the rub.

Private companies in this environment can face a lack of scrutiny and accountability.

I am sure Merz hits some stereotype as well.
