FINANCIAL TIMES I have been less pessimistic about the AI bubble than Damodaran recently, for reasons that will be familiar to regular readers: sane valuations and strong free cash flow for several of the Mag 7; a growing US economy that may grow faster still next year; a world awash in savings that have to go somewhere. I should also note that while half of my own savings are US stock indices, I also own cheaper global indices, some bond funds, and maintain a meaty cash position. This cautious approach, which has had big opportunity costs for the past few years, helps me remain philosophical about bubbles. If we have a crisis, I will have some capital I can put to work in suddenly cheaper equities.

We really need to stop pretending that AI is just a way to "free teachers" and "make school fun"...

AI is built on theft and exploitation
AI is speeding up climate change
AI is good at generating BS that looks meaningful
AI is convincing kids to talk to it rather than people

As for brain uploading, Hendricks said the idea came from people in technology who "think about computers too much", convincing themselves that the brain is hardware and the self is software that can be run on it - or in a computer, or on a robot. "If I could really be uploaded to be made immortal in a computer, then I should be happy to just kill myself right now as long as someone tells me, like, oh, you're living in that metal box over there,” he said. "But I don't think many people would take that bet. I think instinctively we know that's bullshit."

The Didionesque logic of “We tell ourselves stories in order to live” becomes “We ask LLMs to tell us what we want to hear in order to live.” And the formulaic is recast as reflecting human nature, the way individuals across time and space are drawn to the same patterns, as opposed to a feature of algorithmically generated content that usefully serves to shrink audiences’ horizons and harden their tastes, thereby making it easier to predict what they will or won’t consume next. This is not literature as “entertainment,” no. It’s literature as propaganda.
