My HE experience was in the 60s - few of us had phones at home so there was limited need to call!!

That's so interesting! In my family I've found a baby born in 1915 given the names Douglas Haig (a Dundee family but born elsewhere). That has continued down the generations.

Scottish Presbyterian church history is mind-numbing!! What with Burghers and Anti-Burghers and Auld Lichties and New Lichties, some of whom united to form yet more congregations!

I didn't even need to read as far as "Dundee" at the bottom of the entry!! I'm Dundee born and bred back several generations so very familiar with this chap's writing!!

It's similar to my copy of the Homecraft Book (aka the Dundee Schools' cookery book) undated but much later than 1913!

I remember going to see the souterrains at Ardestie when I was studying history at the Morgan 60 years ago! Our history teacher had written a book about the archaeology of Tayside - I still have a copy!!

My gg grandfather was miller at Craichie Mill, Dunnichen in 1835. He went to Libau, Latvia with a young family and several more children were born there, including my g grandfather.

Thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. The pinnacle of my mum's ambition was a house in Craigiebank - instead we lived in a post-WW2 council house (not nearly as pleasant!!)

Really enjoyed your talk. For about 12 years, I've been researching the names on the local war memorial - never thought of that as a one place study!

I find it easier (=less frustrating) to put the first name then second initial followed by an asterisk. There may be loads of results to wade through but at least the one I want is there!

She also has furniture legs named after her!

My knowledge of Fair Isle knitting is rusty but, from what I can remember, only 2 colours are ever used in any row (base colour + contrast).

Traditional Shetland cardigans are worked in the round with a steek then the front cut up and button/buttonhole bands added. That's where I first heard the term - sounds decidedly scary!!
